acupuncture-factsThinking about undergoing acupuncture treatment in Chicago? Wondering if it would be beneficial for you? Acupuncture carries a number of benefits, some of them physical, and some of them mental. Let’s discuss the specifics of the procedure so that you understand exactly what you’re getting into.

Here is everything you should know about acupuncture.

Health Benefits of Acupuncture

When most people consider acupuncture, they wonder if there are really any benefits that they can garner from it. The fact of the matter is that the procedure carries both physical and mental benefits. These benefits have been studied, documented, and proven.

When it comes to your physical well-being, acupuncture carries a number of different benefits. In addition to soothing chronic pain in the back and neck, it is also capable of relieving headaches and arthritis.

By targeting specific pressure points in the body, it increases blood flow to designated areas. This increased blood flow reduces inflammation, thus reducing pain.

There are also a number of mental health benefits associated with acupuncture. Perhaps you suffer from depression? Maybe you’re plagued by anxiety? Have trouble falling asleep at night? In any of these cases, acupuncture can help you.

This procedure helps to releases serotonin, melatonin, and other vital chemicals into the body, allowing you to concentrate and just generally feel good. Your mood will be vastly improved by acupuncture treatment.

Who Shouldn’t Undergo Acupuncture Therapy?

While acupuncture is a beneficial procedure, not everyone should make use of it. There are several types of people who would be putting themselves at risk by undergoing such a treatment. They are as follows:

Those with Bleeding Disorders

Another group of individuals who should not undergo acupuncture treatment are those with bleeding disorders. If you’re especially susceptible to bleeding, or if you’re taking blood thinners, acupuncture can spur on substantial bruising and blood loss.

Those with Pacemakers

You should also avoid undergoing certain types of acupuncture treatment if you have a pacemaker. Specifically, you should avoid electric shock acupuncture, a type of treatment which sends electric shocks through your body. If you have a pacemaker, this procedure can disturb the proper operation of the pacemaker.

The Acupuncture Procedure

Needle Insertion

After having you lay down on a bed, a physician will systematically insert thin needles into your body. These needles will be inserted at different pressure points in your body and will be pushed in at varying depths. In most cases, there is little to no pain associated with needle insertion.

Needle Movement

In most cases, after needles have been inserted into your body, your physician will twist and manipulate them to stimulate pressure points. This will go on for around 10 to 20 minutes, after which the needles will be removed.

There isn’t much of a recovery process associated with acupuncture. The treatment is almost entirely painless, and will, at most, leave only a slight sensation of discomfort. You can go back to living your life normally as soon as the procedure has ended.
