Tips from a Chicago Osteopathic Physician for Increasing Serotonin Levels

Serotonin is one of the human body’s vital chemicals. Sometimes referred to as the “happy chemical,” it regulates messages that are sent and received by the body’s nerve cells.

Generally, the more serotonin your body produces, the better. Healthy serotonin levels offer a number of benefits, enhancing sleep, mood, and appetite.

The question is: how do you keep your serotonin levels high? The answer is: by taking advantage of the following tips!

Exercise Regularly

One of the keys to increasing your serotonin levels is to exercise regularly. Running, jogging, fast walking, and yoga are all terrific exercises to engage in if you want your serotonin levels to rise.

For the best results, it’s recommended that you exercise regularly, but in moderation. Burning yourself out physically is not going to aid in the production of serotonin. In fact, it could have the opposite effect.

In general, it’s best to engage in some sort of physical activity 3 to 5 days a week for 30 minutes to an hour at a time.

Ingest Probiotics

Another way to produce more serotonin is by ingesting probiotics on a regular basis. Probiotics are “good” bacteria that aid in gut health. When ingested, they actually result in the development of serotonin in the gut. Because of this, they are great for treating both anxiety and depression.

Eat a Proper Diet

Just as ingesting probiotics can help you to produce more serotonin, so too can ingesting the proper foods. Generally, a well-balanced diet will do the best job of properly regulating serotonin levels.

However, there are specific foods that are believed to produce more serotonin than others. Some of these foods include eggs, cheese, nuts, salmon, tofu, and pineapple. Working foods such as these into your diet is a great way to reduce the effects of depression and anxiety.

Go Outside

It’s so simple, but these days, many people do not get outside as much as they should. This is troublesome for a number of reasons, one of which is the fact that going outside produces serotonin in the brain.

Why does going outside produce serotonin? UV light. UV light, when absorbed through the skin, creates Vitamin D. This Vitamin D is then used to create serotonin.

This isn’t to say that you should get burnt to a crisp by the sun. In fact, doing so greatly increases your risk of skin cancer. However, it’s recommended that you spend at least a few hours everyday outdoors.

Undergo Acupuncture Treatment

Another way to produce more serotonin in your body is by undergoing acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture is a form of treatment in which thin needles are placed into the body. These needles hit specific pressure points, releasing vital chemicals such as serotonin.

If you want to truly reap the benefits of acupuncture treatment, it’s best to utilize it on a regular basis. This can help to ease everything from anxiety, to depression, to insomnia.

Utilize Supplements

One of the easiest ways to raise your serotonin levels is by utilizing supplements. There are quite a few serotonin-raising supplements on the market today, all of which can be taken with great ease.

If you’re looking for a quick and effective way to produce more serotonin, supplements are an easy solution.
