What Happens When You Don’t Consume Enough Magnesium?

Muscle Issues

One of the functions of magnesium in the body is to regulate the amount of calcium in the joints. When there isn’t enough magnesium around to do this, calcium floods the joints, triggering the muscles and causing them to become overstimulated.

When the muscles become overstimulated, tremors, spasms, and even seizures can take place. In other words, if you’re losing control of your muscles, you could be deficient in magnesium.

Heart Issues

Another symptom of a magnesium deficiency is heart issues. These issues vary from high blood pressure, to irregular heartbeat, and more. In the most severe of cases, a magnesium deficiency can actually be the cause of a heart attack.

Wondering why a lack of magnesium causes heart issues? Because the body needs magnesium in order to create potassium in the body. When there’s not enough potassium in the body, the heart cannot be regulated in the way that it’s designed to be regulated.

Bone Issues

Perhaps the most prominent sign of a magnesium deficiency is an issue with your bones. Those with osteoporosis and other bone-related ailments are often lacking in magnesium. It’s important to note, however, that a calcium deficiency can also lead to brittle and weak bones.

Fortunately, there are plenty of food sources of magnesium. As long as you consume enough of these sources on a daily basis, you’ll be in the clear.

Food sources of magnesium include bananas, almonds, spinach, tofu, whole wheat bread, yogurt, and chocolate, to name just a few. Magnesium can also be found in hard water.
